Design process

Whilst larger garden design projects follow all the stages below, smaller schemes need fewer.  At our initial meeting I will outline the stages I believe will be needed and tailor my fee proposal accordingly.

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Brief

The first step is a meeting with you on site to discuss your aspirations for your garden; how you want it look and work for you, programme and budget.  The key points are recorded in a Brief and sent with my fee proposal for your agreement.

Step 2: Collecting Information, Site Analysis and Survey

I spend time in the garden analysing and recording information to understand it better and unlock its potential.  A topographical survey is needed for most gardens and can be commissioned on your behalf.

Step 3: Outline Garden Design

Then the exciting bit, getting creative and designing a garden tailored to you.  I sketch out and model ideas in 3D, developing and presenting an outline design using rendered garden plans, elevations, perspectives and mood boards.

Step 4: Garden Masterplan Design

Building on the outline design and your comments, the proposal is developed further to a final masterplan layout for your sign-off.

Step 5: Detailed Drawings and Specification

Construction drawings, specification and planting plans are produced describing the project and standard required.  I will advise you on the need for other specialists and can co-ordinate their input within the information package.

Step 6: Tendering the Project

I will recommend contractors who can undertake the work and produce a quality finish, then co-ordinate the tender process to ensure the works are costed accurately and competitively.

Step 7: Building the Garden

Once a contractor is appointed, the works are monitored to ensure the garden is built to the drawings and quality required, entailing regular meetings on site and a prompt response to queries.

Step 8: Planting

Planting is one of my passions – I think it can make or break a garden.  To achieve the desired finish, I select plants and trees for you at nurseries, arrange their delivery and check them carefully prior to them being planted.

Step 9: Garden Aftercare

A plant and tree maintenance schedule is prepared for your new garden, describing the tasks needed to establish and keep it looking good in the years to come.  If you would prefer, I can also offer lessons tailored to your garden’s needs.
